How do you open your heart when it doesn’t feel safe? It’s one of the questions I hear most often, in my sessions, in my courses and in our community.
“I know the heart is important,” people tell me. “But when I try to open my heart, something in me just says no.”
Maybe it feels like a wall has been built around your heart over the years. Or you’ve been hurt, and a part of you believes that opening up is exactly what got you hurt in the first place.
Here’s what I’ve learned in over 20 years as a medical doctor and medical intuitive: a closed heart isn’t a failure. It’s a protection. And it doesn’t open through pressure or by trying harder. It opens through safety, one small step at a time.
In this episode, I share why your heart closed in the first place, what happens in your body when opening up doesn’t feel safe, and how to open your heart gently, at your own pace.

Why Does the Heart Close?
When I tune into people energetically, I very often sense a dense energy around the heart. Sometimes it feels like something is held back, and other times it looks like an armor.
However, it’s never random. For example, maybe it wasn’t safe to show your feelings as a child. Or you had to be the strong one. Perhaps you loved someone with your whole heart and it wasn’t returned, or you lost someone and the pain was so big that a part of you decided: I never want to feel this again.
So your heart did what any wise system would do. It closed and protected you. In other words, a closed heart isn’t failure, and it isn’t proof that you’re not spiritual enough. It was an act of love.
In the episode, I share the first step that helps this protection soften. It’s simpler than you might think.
What Happens in Your Body When Opening Up Doesn’t Feel Safe
Your nervous system is constantly asking one question: am I safe? When the answer is no, your body goes into protection mode. Your shoulders, chest or jaw tense up, your breath gets shallow, and opening up emotionally becomes almost impossible.
At the same time, your heart is part of this conversation. It has its own network of around 40,000 neurons and sends more information to the brain than it receives. When you feel genuine care or appreciation, your heart rhythm becomes smoother. Researchers call this heart coherence. That’s why safety and an open heart are so closely connected.
If you have chest pain or pressure, please see a doctor first. Energy work doesn’t replace medical care.
Why Trying Harder Keeps Your Heart Closed
Many of my clients have done so much inner work. So when their heart doesn’t open, they push harder. But for a nervous system that already feels unsafe, pressure feels like a threat, and the heart stays closed. In the episode, I explain the rule I use in all of my energy healing work, and why it’s often the missing piece.
What If Opening Your Heart Brings Up Tears, Old Pain or Nothing at All?
When your heart starts to open, what comes up first is often not love and light. It can be tears, sadness or old grief. Or you feel nothing, a kind of numbness. In fact, both are normal. You’ll hear why this is actually a good sign, and why you don’t need to relive your old story to let it go.
A Gentle Heart-Opening Practice
At 19:19, I guide you through a heart-opening practice that takes about ten minutes. There’s nothing to achieve and nothing to force. Please don’t listen to it while driving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I open my heart?
Usually because a part of you learned that it wasn’t safe. A closed heart is a protection, not a failure. It tends to soften through safety and gentleness, not through effort.
Is it normal to cry when I open my heart?
Yes. When the protection softens, feelings that were held back for a long time can start to move. That’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong.
What if I feel nothing when I try to open my heart?
Numbness is also a form of protection. Be patient with it. In this episode, I share how to meet it without pressure.
Can a closed heart feel like tightness in my chest?
Many people describe tension or heaviness in the chest when they feel unsafe. But chest pain always needs a medical check first. Energy healing doesn’t replace medical treatment.
