Spiritual bypassing is the trap of using spiritual beliefs or practices - like forgiveness, positivity, acceptance, or surrender - to avoid an honest encounter with an emotion that is still present. It can look spiritually mature from the outside, while underneath, the real feeling is only being pushed further down into the body and the energy system.
In this episode I explain why spiritually inclined and highly sensitive people are especially prone to this pattern, why difficult emotions are never a sign of spiritual failure, and how working with the energy of the heart allows you to truly feel and transmute an emotion instead of suppressing it or being overwhelmed by it.

SUMMARY
What Spiritual Bypassing Really Means
Spiritual bypassing means using a spiritual belief or explanation to avoid an honest encounter with what is still present emotionally. Something happens, maybe someone is unkind to you, and immediately your reaction is, I need to forgive, or I need to send this person love. At the same time, you skip right past your own reaction and your own feelings.
From the outside, this can look spiritually mature. You're not reacting, you already understand everything, you already have compassion. But if the emotional pain underneath is never actually met, you are not releasing it. You are pushing it deeper into your energy system, and you lose the chance to actually learn from it.
Why Spiritually Inclined People Are Especially Vulnerable
Spiritually inclined and sensitive people are particularly prone to spiritual bypassing, because so much of what we value is responding with love, compassion, and a higher consciousness. Sensitive people also often already carry a pattern of avoiding conflict, suppressing anger, or prioritising other people's feelings, and spiritual language can unintentionally reinforce those old patterns.
Someone who fears conflict may call their avoidance "acceptance." Someone who suppresses anger may call it "choosing love." Someone who struggles with boundaries may believe unconditional love means continuing to tolerate harmful behaviour. Someone who fears making a decision may describe their inaction as "surrendering to the universe." In each case, a real and valid feeling is quietly being bypassed rather than felt.
Why Pushing Emotions Down Doesn't Make Them Disappear
Everything is energy and vibration, and emotions are quite literally energy in motion. When a difficult emotion arises and you immediately push it down, whether through a spiritual practice or simply by refusing to feel it, that energy does not evaporate. It cannot. It lingers in your energetic body.
The more often this happens, the more you increase the odds that the same emotion eventually surfaces in a much more explosive way, because it has been building up underneath the surface all along. This is precisely why spiritual bypassing becomes such a hindrance to real healing — healing requires that we actually face, acknowledge, and release what is there, not bury it more deeply.
Feeling Without Being Overwhelmed - Two Stories
When I lived in San Francisco, I spent a lot of time with the spiritual teacher Adyashanti, and something he said has stayed with me ever since. Even an enlightened being still experiences the full range of human emotions, joy, anger, jealousy, sadness, all of it. The goal was never to stop feeling them. It was learning not to let these energies take over, and instead to allow them to simply flow through you.
I experienced this firsthand about eight months ago. I had been doing a lot of heart-opening meditation, and my heart felt unusually open. I was having lunch with a friend who was quite agitated while telling me a story, and in that moment I could genuinely feel her energy coming at me, almost like a punch to the stomach. Normally, an energy like that would have lodged itself in my system and I might have felt it for hours. But because my heart was so open, I could observe it instead. It had nothing to attach to. It simply moved through me, and then it was gone.
The Heart Is the Real Solution
When we learn to connect to the energy of the heart, whether through meditation or simply through practice, it becomes so much easier to meet a difficult emotion with acceptance rather than avoidance. From that place, the emotion can be genuinely transmuted through the power of love, not forced or pretended, but as a natural unfolding.
Working with the heart in this way often brings older, unreleased emotions to the surface, and this is not a setback. It is a cleansing process. My invitation to you is simple: if something arises, don't push it down. Don't tell yourself you shouldn't feel it, or that it isn't spiritual to feel it. Meet it instead with honesty and with compassion for yourself, and know that feeling whatever you feel is deeply human. From there, you can return to the heart.
