The energetic roots of depression are something that is rarely talked about, even though I see them again and again in my work as a medical intuitive.
Depression is real and complex, and biological, psychological, and spiritual factors all play a role. But in this episode I want to explore a layer that is often overlooked: the emotional and energetic layer.
Specifically, the role of the heart chakra. When I do an energetic reading on someone struggling with depression, the heart chakra is almost always closed.
In this episode I share why that happens, how the heart gradually shuts down to protect us, and how heart activation can begin to lift the depression at its energetic root.

SUMMARY
The Hidden Energetic Roots of Depression
Depression is real and complex. Biological factors, psychological history, and even spiritual disconnection can all play a role. Sometimes people need therapy, medical support, or medication, and this episode is not about replacing any of that. But there is another layer that I believe is often missing from the conversation — the energetic roots of depression, and especially the role of the heart chakra.
In my work as a medical intuitive, when I do an energetic reading on someone who is struggling with depression, one finding shows up almost every single time. The heart chakra is closed. And I want to share with you what that actually means, how it happens, and what becomes possible when we begin to open the heart again.
The Five Layers of Healing - and Where Depression Lives
I work with a model I call the five layers of healing — a holistic framework for understanding why a symptom is present and where the cause may live. The physical layer covers hormones, neurotransmitters, sleep, gut health, and inflammation. The mental layer involves negative thought loops, hopelessness, and self-criticism. The spiritual layer relates to a sense of meaning and connection to something greater than yourself. The emotional and energetic layers, which are deeply intertwined, are the ones we'll focus on here, because in my experience they're the most overlooked.
Why the Heart Chakra Is Always Involved in Depression
The chakras are energetic centres along the midline of the body. Each one is tied to specific organs and glands and also carries an emotional theme. Think of each chakra like a software disk that stores information and feeds it into your physical body.
The heart chakra holds the energy of love, compassion, gratitude, care, and joy. When the heart is open, you feel vibrant and connected. Think about how you feel when you are in love — everything seems lighter, even things you didn't like before. That's the heart chakra wide open, plugged into what I believe is an infinite source of energy.
Depression feels different. It feels like a weight. And on an energetic level, the heart chakra is literally offline. Sometimes this is felt as tension or pain in the chest, and sometimes — when the heart has been closed for a long time — as emotional numbness. The heart is the largest energetic centre in the body and acts as the pacemaker for all other chakras, which is why a closed heart affects everything.
Why the Heart Shuts Down - and How Energetic Roots of Depression Begin
No baby comes into the world depressed. Children arrive with open, curious, expressive hearts. But then life happens. Rejection. Emotional neglect. Critical parents. Bullying. Heartbreak. Betrayal. Loss. The heart learns that being open is dangerous, that staying open means getting hurt. And so, very gradually and without any conscious decision, it begins to close. It builds armour. It protects.
This protection may have helped you survive at one point. But over time, the closed heart cuts you off from the very source of energy that makes life feel meaningful and joyful. This is where the energetic roots of depression begin.
How Heart Activation Heals - A Client Story
I want to share the story of a client I'll call Thomas. He had been depressed since his teenage years. Emotionally unavailable parents, bullying at school, bullying at work — he said he felt like an alien in this world. He had been through therapy and medication, which helped him for a while, but he wanted to move forward in a deeper, more natural way.
That's when we began working with heart activation. Over time, his depression got less and less, until eventually he was able to overcome it completely.
Heart activation is not toxic positivity. It is not pretending everything is fine or forcing yourself to feel something you don't. It is the practice of consciously generating feelings of love, gratitude, compassion, or care within your heart — regardless of what is happening around you. It is the realisation that you do not have to wait for the outside world to change before you can begin to feel differently inside.
This is one of the most freeing truths I have ever come to know. As children, we were dependent on our parents for love. As adults, we have the ability to plug into the source of love within ourselves. You do not need a partner, approval, or the right circumstances. You can connect to a place within you that has never been broken — and that has always been there, even if it has been hidden under layers of protection.
The First Step - Nature and Heart Activation
If you want to begin, one of the most beautiful practices is heart activation in nature. Sit near a tree. Place your awareness in your heart. Begin to breathe through the heart and gently generate feelings of love or gratitude. Nature is harmonious within itself, and its energy supports the opening of your heart in a way that is much gentler than trying to do this alone on your couch.
When you learn to open your heart, depression must begin to lift. It is not possible to feel love, gratitude, and compassion in an open heart and remain depressed at the same time. They cannot coexist. This is why I love this work so much — because the place within your heart that has never been broken is still there, always waiting to be remembered.
